Carbon removal credits are vital in combating climate change by incentivizing carbon capture technologies and practices. They drive innovation, encourage carbon sequestration projects, help achieve emission reduction goals, and create economic opportunities. While not a sole solution (it is still necessary to tackle rising emissions at source), they play a crucial role in addressing the urgent challenges of climate collapse.
The graph shows how the world can achieve net zero emissions by 2050 whilst limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. A combination of emissions reductions and carbon removal is required to achieve this result. In terms of carbon removal, to which biochar is a potential major contributor, it can be seen that 4-5 gigatons of removal will be required. This underlines why scale carbon removal projects are a necessary and a critical part of the solution.
Biochar, although an ancient technology, has now found a leading role in fighting climate breakdown. Biochar captures CO2 by sequestering carbon in its porous structure. Produced through pyrolysis, a process involving high-temperature and low-oxygen conditions, organic materials, such as agricultural waste, forestry residues, woody waste, organic municipal water or sewage, are heated, and the resulting residue is biochar—a stable form of carbon. When applied to soils, biochar acts as a stable, long-term carbon sink, mitigating climate change by storing carbon and enhancing soil health. As an additive to building materials biochar also permanently captures carbon and can improve the structural integrity and performance of materials.
Converting the carbon dioxide in biochar to sellable carbon removal credits typically involves quantifying the amount of carbon sequestered and verifying it through recognized standards. Carbon Organix has a long-standing association with The Pond Foundation, experts in carbon footprint analysis and measurement and regenerative agriculture, to facilitate our certification and audit processes. Meanwhile, Carbon Organix intends to trade carbon removal credits through platforms such as Puro.earth (a company majority owned by NASDAQ – a recognised certifier).
